Time Proven Safe Reference

Night Nurse utilizes the protocols and guidelines developed by Barton D. Schmitt, MD, FAAP, a leading authority and pioneer in Pediatric Telephonic Triage, Medical Director, The After-Hours Call Center, The Children's Hospital, Denver, and Professor of Pediatrics at University of Colorado School of Medicine.

The protocols cover over 100 common pediatric telephone  complaints  which represent 99% of all calls.  The protocols guide nurses to decide who needs to be seen immediately, who needs to be seen by appointment, and who can be safely treated at home.

Advantages of These Protocols:

  • Tested on over 700,000 calls with no adverse outcomes

  • Reviewed  by over 200 primary care pediatricians and by pediatric emergency medicine specialists, pediatric triage nurses and other pediatric sub-specialists

  • Reduce risk of delayed diagnosis, complications and medical liability

  • Prevent unnecessary referrals to emergency departments

  • Replace unnecessary visits with mainstream, detailed telephone advice

  • Help after-hours nurses better manage sick-child calls

These protocols are clinical guidelines and used in conjunction with critical thinking and clinical judgment.  Our Night Nurses receive special training before using these protocols, which are strictly adhered to, taking into account individual circumstances. The protocols are kept current based upon changes in medical literature and medical practice.
